Directed by John McTiernan, Writing Credits: Tom Clancy (novel "The Hunt for Red October"), Larry Ferguson (screenplay), and Donald Stewart (screenplay).... The description of this movie according to IMDB.com is "In 1984, the USSR's best submarine captain in their newest sub violates orders and heads for the USA. Is he trying to defect, or to start a war?"
Personally I feel that the description should read "In 1984, an epic person with an epic cast and about epicness" then I would have watched before 2012.... This movie came out in 1990 i was alive at that time, but never watched it..... Mom would turn it on and as the music started I was out.... Mental thoughts were "It's about water/submarines, and politics" so I thought snoozefest..... Boy, was I wrong!!!!!
This movie was about Connery who is the USSR submarine captain who disobeys orders and heads toward USA. Now the way he disobeys these orders is some James Bond type stuff.... Literally if you have never seen this movie stop reading, watch the movie come back and reread the post and comment let me know how you feel.... He breaks the random dudes neck (the only person that knew about the true mission that Connery never planned to carry out)... this guy might as well been wearing red as fast as he died lol... Their is some Jack Ryan stuff, he goes and talks to about a million people including Admiral Greer and Skip Tyler about the Red October what it is, why, where is it, and most importantly what the purpose of it. After finding out that it is a submarine that when it's side panels are open it is soundless..... YIKES if your mission was to destroy it lol.... Back to the Russians, now after Ramius kills the one person that could thwart his plans Dr. Petrov is brought in to determine cause of death.... He slipped on his tea... o.O (I had to laugh).... Some crew members slightly question the happenings, and when the key of the 'accidental' death victim should go... Ramius keeps the key (FF this key is to fire missiles- there are two keys to be kept on two persons)... Later that evening the important people of the ship eat an extravagant meal together, included in the party is the doctor and several of the higher ranking officers.... Petrov is sent to get the reports on the radiation levels (it was a big deal in submarines back in the day).... Upon his exit the door is locked and the officers get to business.... Ramius thus informs the others that the guy had to die as he would not allow them to carry out their special mission which is to defect..... He also informs them that he has sent a letter to the Russian government informing of his plans to do so..... Some of the officers question his motives, he dismisses their questions and offers them some tea.... o.O (remember the dead guy slipped on his tea....) they said nothing.... Back to America, they have now realized the Red October is headed their way and what now needs to be determined is that is it a defection or an attack.... Ryan is then sent to brief several higher ups in the military as to what his prediction on the matter is.... He then learn that Ramius the highly esteemed captain for the Russians is not even Russian he is Lithuanian.... and that his wife had died a year ago.... After some arguing amongst the Generals, Ryan is hit with an epiphany... Ramius may be trying to defect.... Ryan and some General get into, Ryan is then singled out to a private conference after having disrespected said general.... "You have two days..." to prove that Ramius is not a threat and that he is also trying to deliver on of the greatest submarines ever built (at this point) into their hands... To the American submarines, Seaman Jones is trying to teach a newbie how to listen to and what to for using their equipment.... After some times Jones hears something that he has never heard before and works diligently in order to ensure that he heard something before taking it to his commander.... At this point Jones takes it to his commander, having him listen to it at actual speed which it sounds like ABSOLUTELY nothing... and then an increased speed at which the begin to follow because they know what they are now listening for.... The Russian Ambassador go the the Americans for help in finding their 'lost' submarine.... at this time the Americans still don't know if they need to help the Russians capture their vessel or help the vessel make it to their gates.... or land whatever...... Back to the Russian vessel, Ramius and Borodin are having a private conversation about America.... Borodin asks if Ramius thinks that they would allow him into Montana (o.O).... When questioned about his question, Borodin proceeds to tell Ramius that his only dreams is to live in Montana go fishing and marry him a fat woman, travel to Arizona in the winter and potentially marry him another fat woman
The actual convo goes something like this...
'Capt. Vasili Borodin: "I will live in Montana. And I will marry a round American woman and raise rabbits, and she will cook them for me. And I will have a pickup truck... maybe even a "recreational vehicle." And drive from state to state. Do they let you do that?"
Captain Ramius: "I suppose."
Capt. Vasili Borodin: "No papers?"
Captain Ramius: "No papers, state to state."
Capt. Vasili Borodin: "Well then, in winter I will live in... Arizona. Actually, I think I will need two wives."
Captain Ramius: "Oh, at least." '....
Americans on land, Ryan then comes up with a plan to board the Red October... After some crazy stuff... lying about being a General, and then helicopter dropping into the freezing cold ocean in the middle of nowhere he boards the American vessel that is following the Red October.... Talks to the captain and 'proves' to him in a very lucky manner that he knows that Ramius is not a threat but instead a defector.... In order to have Ramius prove himself Ryan had morris code sent to him and based on his answers he proved that just wanted away from Russia and into the hugs of the US.... So according to Ramius's plans, the radiator alarm goes off, signaling to the crew of the Red October that it is hazard to stay on this submarine any longer... So the crew all get into the escape rafts and watch as the captain and other officers go down as the Americans show up.... So Ryan, the captain of the American Submarine and some other people all board the Red October.... One ship that was sent to find the Red October found them and fired upon them... However unluckily for that sub, Ramius had taught the captain and knew how arrogant the captain was.... The non-Red October ship blew up parts flying everywhere.... However on the surface as the Red October crew was being picked up by the Americans did not know about the other Russian sub and thus thought that their beloved captain and the officers left on board all died trying to fend off the American forces.... Happy Ending?? Sorry not quite yet... There was a saboteur on board starts shooting on the Red October..... and of course it hits the one person will a dream.... Shot to the chest or stomach-it was kinda covered (they weren't big on gore at this point in the 90s)
'Capt. Vasili Borodin: "I would like to have seen Montana." '
So sad.... All he wanted was fat wives.... On pursuit of the shooter Ramius is shot in the shoulder leaving Ryan to find him and stop him before he kills them all....
'[Shootout in the missile room] Captain Ramius: "Hey, Ryan, be careful what you shoot at. Most things in here don't react too well to bullets." Jack Ryan: "Right." [Moves closer to enemy, who fires several shots at him] Jack Ryan: "*I* have to be careful what *I* shoot at?" Jack Ryan: [to himself, imitating Ramius] "Ryan, some things in here don't react well to bullets." "Yeah, like me. I don't react well to bullets." ' After such shoot out Ryan kills the guy and heads back to the rest of the crew... Onward the America..... Here is what Ramius said was to be his reason for the defection....
'Captain Ramius: "I miss the peace of fishing like when I was a boy. Forty years I've been at sea. A war at sea. A war with no battles, no monuments... only casualties. I widowed her the day I married her. My wife died while I was at sea, you know."'
Here lies the final phrase of the movie...
'Captain Ramius: "... and the sea will grant each man new hope, as sleep brings dreams of home." Christopher Columbus. Jack Ryan: "Welcome to the New World, Captain." '
See great movie!!!!! Of course stuff was let out, you have to see the movie to get the small yet important things.... This was just a mega run through of all the major events that made the movie what it was....
